Tips for Your 1st Day of Class
Arrive 10-15 minutes early, prior to class, to use the restroom and get familiar with the space. Wear athletic clothing (no jeans), bring a water, and be prepared to be barefoot. Do not eat a lot prior to class. When training, watch the senior students. Don’t focus on what you can’t do, but instead, focus on learning one or two new things each day. Your instructor will work on the very basics with you. Ask questions and do not feel out of place. Everyone there had a 1st day of class! It’s ok to be nervous or unsure. This will be a new experience, but its only one step on your new journey. Come to class in a serious manner, ready to have fun and learn Tang Soo Do.
Things to Know in Your First Class
- Cha Ryut – this command simply means attention. Just like the military, this command is called to put everyone in a stance to be attentive and listen. You stand with your feet together, back straight, and hands by your side. You are ready to learn Tang Soo Do!
- Choon Bee – this command is a stance called ready stance. Your instructor will show you this on your first day. It is the first stance before any technique, form, or sparring.
- Take off your shoes and socks before entering the training room. Always bow prior to walking into and out of the training room.
- Bow to instructors and say “thank you sir/mam” at the end of training or training activity.
- Relax and just have fun. You will learn more if you do!
